Ireland Fishing Industry Market Research Report

Published: March 2006

This Irish Fishing Industry report is part of OCO Consulting’s new Industrial Series of reports. In addition to being a significant part of Ireland’s coastal and rural economy, the sea fishing sector is now under increasing pressure to become leaner and to diversify its operations, which will re-define the sector as it stands today.

This report aims to provide an accurate and concise overview of the key trends in the sea fishing industry over the last four to five years and to highlight the major factors that are driving, constraining or shaping change, and the pace at which it occurs.

Fish catches rose in most areas in the 1960s and early 70s, but thereafter catches began to decline due to overfishing and the advent of quotas. RoI was one of the few countries that continued to increase landings at this time, though it’s overall catch is low for a maritime nation and only about 20-30% of the fish caught in Irish waters is landed by Irish boats – a source of justifiable controversy.

However it is the reality of declining stocks for many key species and an ever-tighter regulatory environment, combined with government and EU investment that drive the industry, which faces a major challenge to reinvent itself – particularly how it operates, and which products it brings to market.

Much of the problem is not local and is shared by the industry worldwide – how to prosper in the face of reduced catches and falling numbers of producers. So far the difficulty has been alleviated considerably by rising fish prices and good export market demand, which have supported revenue levels despite the falling volumes. Further development of aquaculture is an imperative for the industry going forward, and encouragement can be taken from emerging signs of producers becoming more integrated in processing locally.

Market size and segmentation data for the key fishing sectors included in this report (which are listed below) are shown for the period 2001 to 2005.

Also included is a review of the supply situation along with short company profiles for the key industry players. The report reviews some of the opportunities and possible future developments in the industry and also presents a value forecast for the performance of the market to 2010.
