Released: February 2011 After researching the UK waste management market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: Market Review 2006-2010: The volume of waste arising in the UK is believed to have declined throughout the five year review period up to 2010. In the latter year, the volume of waste arisings is believed to have fallen by 2% to 278.3 million tonnes, representing an overall decline of 14% compared with 2006. This overall downward trend is largely a reflecting of UK and EU legislation and regulations which aim to reduce the overall volume of waste generated. Furthermore, in the second half of the review period, the economic downturn is also believed to have a exerted a downward pressure on waste arisings in a number of sectors. As such, construction & demolition waste fell strongly in 2008 and 2009, reflecting reduced construction activity as a result of the economic and financial crisis. Nonetheless, construction & demolition continued to account for the largest proportion total waste arisings, representing an estimated 36% of the total in 2010. Waste from regular household waste collections in England has declined throughout the review period, with the strongest annual declines recorded in both 2007/08 and 2008/09 at over 7%. In 2010/11, the volume of waste collected is believed to have fallen by a marginal level to 23.6 million tonnes, equivalent to an overall decline of 9% compared with 2006/07. Regular household waste collections continue to account for the largest proportion of household waste, although the share has declined from 57% in 2005/06 to an estimated 48% in 2010/11. This partly reflects the increase in household recycling. Indeed the share of recycling to total household waste collected has increased from 8% in 2006/07 to almost 10% in 2010/11. Private contractors are believed to have continued to represent the largest share of commercial and industrial waste collection, accounting for an estimated 73% in 2010, equivalent to 40.2 million tonnes in the year. In contrast, internal disposal is believed to have remained the smallest sector of commercial and industrial waste collection, representing 5% at 2.6 million tonnes in 2010. Market Forecast 2011-2015: The total volume of waste arisings in the UK is projected to contract throughout the five year forecast period up to 2015. In the latter year the total volume is expected to reach 265.3 million tonnes, representing a cumulative decline of 5% compared with 2010. The overall decline is largely due to reductions in waste generated in the quarrying & mining and industrial sectors. Moreover EU legislation and UK government policies that aim to reduce the amount of waste generated and to maximise reuse and recycling are anticipated to drive the downward trend in the overall volume of waste arising.
