Released: December 2009 After researching the UK utility capital expenditure market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: Market Review 2004/05-2008/09: Utilities (water and sewerage, gas supply and distribution, gas transmission, electricity supply and distribution, electricity generation and electricity transmission) total capital expenditure declined by an estimated 3% to £10.8 billion in 2008/09. This is in contrast to strong annual growth recorded in the previous three years, with growth levels fluctuating between 13% and 17%. The decline during 2008/09 is largely a result of reduced capital expenditure in the electricity generation and water & sewerage industries. Prior to that, capital investment was increased strongly in most utilities sectors, with particular strong growth recorded in electricity supply, distribution and transmission as well as the water & sewerage sector. Market Forecast 2009/10-2013/14: Capital expenditure growth in the gas industry (transmission and supply) is expected to reflect the need for investment in the gas network, in order to cope with the greater use of LNG and gas from Europe. Investment is also required to meet demands for the increase entry capacity to the gas pipeline system, where the new pipelines and LNG facilities are to be built to ensure the storage of gas imports. Nonetheless, total capital spending in the gas industry is anticipated to decline during the majority of the forecast period. Overall, expenditure is anticipated to be reduced by 17% between 2008/09 and 2013/14. Note to Editors: MBD specialises in business to business market research.
