After researching the UK underground pipes market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:
MARKET REVIEW 2004-2008:
Demand for underground pipes has been increased during much of the review period, largely reflecting the relatively buoyant construction industry in recent years. Nonetheless, construction output contracted during 2008, reflecting the current economic climate, the downturn in the housing market, and the tighter lending criteria imposed by banks as a result of the credit crunch, in turn restricting demand from the sector. However, increased infrastructure investment notably in the water, sewerage and road sectors during both 2007 and 2008 has boosted demand for underground pipes during the second half of the review period. Indeed, sales of underground pipes are estimated to have increased by 5% to £693.4 million at MSP in 2008, also representing overall growth of 18% compared with the beginning of the review period.
MARKET FORECAST 2009-2013:
The UK market for underground pipes is expected to be constrained in the short term by projected declines in construction output, notably in the private housing sector, during both 2009 and 2010. However, this is expected to be partly offset by continued Government investment in infrastructure, predominantly in the water, sewerage and road sectors. Indeed, sales of underground tubes and pipes are projected to increase during each year between 2010 and 2013, albeit at moderate annual levels. In 2013, the value of the market is anticipated to reach £747.3 million (at 2008 prices), equivalent to an increase of 3% in the year and of 8% compared with 2008. Growth reflects a projected recovery in construction output from 2011 onwards, along with increased civil engineering investment throughout the forecast period.
