Released: April 2009 After researching the UK timber & joinery market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: Market Review 2004-2008: The UK market for timber and semi-finished timber products is believed to have declined by a nominal 16% to £3.4 billion in 2008. This downturn partly reflects the current economic downturn and its negative effect on the UK construction sector, a enduse sector of timber and semi-finished timber products. UK apparent consumption of timber & semi-finished timber products has increased in nominal terms during three of the five years under review, with growth rates peaking in 2007 at 16%. Overall, between 2004 and 2008 the value of the UK market for timber and semi-finished timber products contracted by a marginal level. Market Forecast 2009-2013: MBD expect the timber & semi-finished timber products market to decline in real terms by a significant 17% in 2009 and again by 4% in 2010, reflecting the current downturn in the housebuilding market and the economic outlook. However the market is anticipated to return to growth in the medium-term, although the timing of which will be strongly dependent on the recovery in the construction market. The increased environmental awareness and the trend towards offsite manufacturing in the construction sector is expected to exert a positive influence on the market. This is also supported by changes in building regulations and government plans to make all new homes zero carbon rated by 2016, which favours the use of timber due to the material’s superior thermal insulation properties.
