Released: February 2010 After researching the UK timber distribution market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: Market Review 2005-2009: The UK market for sawn timber, including direct sales and sales through other distributors, is believed to have declined by 14% in 2009, to £1.78 billion. This follows a significant 20% decline recorded in the previous year. The fall in demand during the latest two years, reflects the dampening affect of the economic recession, and indeed in particularly the downturn in the construction industry. However prior to this increases of 6% and 18% were recorded in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Indeed during the first part of the review period, demand for sawn timber was stimulated by a buoyant construction market, in particular in the private and public housing sectors. Timber also benefited from the trend towards offsite manufacturing and modern methods of construction, which has resulted in the increased use of wood in the construction sector. However overall, distributor sales of sawn timber have decline by 14% compared with 2005. Market Forecast 2010-2014: MBD expect the market for timber and semi-finished timber products to increase by a restricted 1% in real terms in 2010. However it should be noted that this is in comparison with a very weak market in 2009. Nonetheless this reflects the anticipated improving conditions in the market as the economy starts to come out of recession. Indeed growth is anticipated for each of the following four years under review as construction output increases. With annual growth rates oscillating between 2% and 5% in real terms. Overall growth of 17% in real terms is expected to be recorded between 2009 and 2014, taking the value of sales to £3.58 billion in 2014 (at 2009 prices). However it should be noted that any forecast of the market made in the current economic climate inevitably carries a greater level of uncertainty than would typically be the case.
