After researching the UK structural steel market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

Market Review 2004-2008:

The UK market for structural steel in value terms is believed to have declined by 5% in 2008, to an estimated £6041 million. Prior to this increases were recorded during each year of the review period with annual growth rates peaking at 12% in 2004. Indeed cumulative growth of a significant 40% was recorded between 2004 and 2007. The decline in 2008, is believed to reflect a fall in demand and indeed a reduction in prices during the second half of the year from many end use sectors of structural steel, in particularly the construction industry.

Market Forecast 2009-2013:

Demand for UK structural steel in volume terms is expected to decline by 11% and 4% in 2009 and 2010 respectively. This reflects the anticipated affects of the economic downturn during the same period, and indeed the projected fall in construction work. However growth is anticipated for the remaining three years of the forecast period ending in 2013. Annual levels of growth are expected to peak at 6% in 2013, taking demand to 1.5 million tonnes. However any forecast made in the current set of conditions inevitably carries a greater level of uncertainty than would typically be the case.
