After researching the UK roofing materials & contracting market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

Market Review 2005-2009:

In 2009, the UK market for roofing material coverings contracted by an estimated 25% to 91.1 million m2, consolidating a decline of 12% recorded in the previous year. This is in contrast to growth of 11% recorded between 2005 and 2007, with the market peaking at 138 million m2. The decline in the latter part of the review period reflects the significant downturn in construction activity. Up to 2007, demand for roofing materials was driven by a buoyant construction market, in particular in the residential sector. However stronger growth was restricted due to the increased proportion in the residential sector accounted for by flats and apartments.

Market Forecast 2010-2014:

The UK market for roofing material coverings is expected to return to growth in 2010, albeit at just a marginal level. This is largely a reflection of tentative signs of increased construction output, albeit from a very low base. This is anticipated to be followed by slightly stronger annual growth of between 4% and 6% in the following four years, with the market for roofing material coverings forecast to reach 109.7 million m2 in 2014. This is equivalent to an overall increase of 20% compared with 2009, although the size of the market is not expected to return to the levels seen prior to the economic downturn in the next five years. During the economic downturn the private construction sector was particularly badly hit, while some growth for roof coverings continued to be generated from the public sector, in particular public repair & maintenance. However this trend is likely to be reversed in the coming years, as the private construction sector is expected to return to growth, albeit from a low base, while output ion the public sector is anticipated to decline, as a result of pubic spending cuts.
