Released: April 2009 After researching the UK road haulage market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: Market Review 2004-2008: The volume of goods lifted increased overall by an estimated 3% between 2004 and 2008, to 1.799 billion tonnes in the latter year. Growth was recorded in each year under review, with the exception of 2008 when a 2% reduction was recorded, with the annual level peaking at 6% in 2004. In 2008, the volume of goods moved is believed to have reached 153 billion tonne kilometres, equivalent to a reduction of 3% in the year and of a 1% growth compared with 2004. The volume of goods moved is estimated to have increased year-on-year through the first four years of the review period, with growth levels peaking at 2% in 2006. Both the volume of goods moved and the volume of goods lifted contracted in 2008 reflecting the downturn in the global economy and the decrease in consumer and business economic activity. Less economic activity, be it consumer or business spending facilitates a reduction in demand for road haulage. Market Forecast 2009-2013: Between 2008 and 2013, the UK market for road haulage is anticipated to fluctuate with an overall trend for growth evident, post the current economic downturn. The goods lifted sector is expected to demonstrate overall real term growth of 5% between 2008 and 2013, to 1.89 billion tonnes in the latter year. The volume of goods moved is projected to reach 163.5 billion tonne kilometres in 2013, equivalent to a 4% growth in the year and of 7% in real terms compared with 2008. The downturn has and will continue to facilitate a reduction in economic activity and spending which will decrease demand for road haulage services. When economic growth returns to the UK economy as it is forecasted to in late 2009 or early 2010 there will be an increase in expenditure on goods that require road haulage such as durables and this will act as a large stimulus for the sector.
