UK Restaurants Market Development Report Press Release: UK Restaurants Market Development Report

Released: March 2009

After researching the UK restaurants market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

Market Review 2004-2008:

In 2008, the UK market for restaurants is believed to have declined by 3% to £5373 million. This is due to increased economic uncertainties exerting a downward pressure on restaurant turnover, in particular during the second half of the year. The rising cost of food and the decline in consumer spending are further factors that have had an adverse effect on demand in 2008. Prior to this, sales increased year-on-year between 2004 and 2007, culminating in growth of 7% to £5526 million in the latter year. Nonetheless, annual levels of growth have slowed from 4% in 2004 to 2% in 2007.

Market Forecast 2009-2013:

The UK market for restaurants is expected to increase during the majority of the five year forecast period, reaching an estimated £5449 million (at 2008 prices) in 2013, equivalent to overall growth of 1% in real terms compared with 2008. A marked decline of 5% in real terms is anticipated for 2009 due to the economic downturn, which is now expected to be more severe and prolonged than previously anticipated. Depending on an economic recovery, the restaurants market is expected to return to growth in 2010, although at a modest 1% in real terms. Indeed, between 2010 and 2013, market development is forecast to remain somewhat restricted, with annual growth rates not expected to exceed 2%. A stronger development is expected to be hindered due to restaurants facing increased competition from pubs, which are increasingly moving into the food sector. Nonetheless the restaurants market is expected to continue to benefit from social trends towards eating out as well as long-term demographic trends towards an older population with higher disposable income.
