After researching the UK railway engineering market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

Market Review 2006-2010:

Total expenditure in the railway industry increased during each year of the review period with the exception of a 15% decline in 2005/06. In 2009/10, total expenditure in the railway industry increased by 6% to £4.99 billion, consolidating growth of 4% recorded in the previous year. this represents an overall increase of 32% between 2005/06 and 2009/10.

In 2009/10, investment in rolling stock in Great Britain was increased by a strong 23% to £423 million, more than offsetting the 14% decline recorded in the previous year. Prior to that, investment levels fluctuated somewhat, with a significant 41% decline recorded in 2006/07.

Market Forecast 2011-2015:

Total investment in the rail engineering sector is anticipated to increase throughout the forecast period, with growth of 6% forecast for 2010/11. This is a result of the support from the Government within the comprehensive spending review and Network Rails objective to reduce passenger crowding. Overall during the forecast period, the level of investment is projected to increase by 45% between 2009/10 and 2014/15. Indeed, the anticipated further population growth, increasing road congestion and changes in the world travel markets are expected to provide the potential for the rail sector to grow. Major projects to drive investment in the sector over the forecast period include the rebuilding of Birmingham New Street and Reading stations.
