UK Public Houses Market Development Report Press Release: UK Public Houses Market Development Report

Released: August 2010

After researching the UK public houses market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

Market Review 2006-2010:

The UK economic downturn is anticipated to continue to affect the public house market in the current year with the number of public houses declining by 2% to 51 380. This reduction consolidates the year-on-year declines evident between 2007 and 2009. The declining trend in the number of pubs reflects a number of factors. One such factor is the trend towards drinking alcohol at home, as supermarkets sell alcohol at significantly lower prices than pubic houses. The decline also reflects the introduction of the smoking ban in 2007, weakening consumer confidence due to the recent recession and also the rising costs for public houses, such as the increasing cost of labour. Nonetheless, research carried out by the British Beer & Pub Association in February 2010 revealed that pub closures in the first half of 2010 were estimated to be 39 a week, a decline from 52 closures a week in the first half of 2009.

Market Forecast 2011-2015:

The severity of the recent recession coupled with the slow pace of recovery is anticipated to continually impact the public house market. Nonetheless, although the market has been one of the most damaged, it is projected to recover from the recession with some speed, with the number of public houses beginning to increase in 2012. Between 2010 and 2015 the number of UK pubs is expected to increase by 5% to 54 379 in the latter year.
