Released: September 2010 After researching the UK metal recycling market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: Market Review 2006-2010: In 2009, UK demand for recycled metal declined by 3% to £1825 million, largely as a result of the economic downturn and global financial crisis, which has significantly affected enduse industries such as the construction, engineering and automotive industries. In 2010, the metal recycling market is projected to return to growth, albeit at a marginal level, as the economic recovery remains fragile. This is in contrast to growth of 8% recorded in 2006 and again in 2007. By the end of the current year, the UK market for metal recycling is projected at £1830.5 million, representing overall growth of 7% compared with 2006. In volume terms, the UK market for metal recycling is estimated to contract by 2% to 7.32 million tonnes in 2010, consolidating slightly stronger declines of 5% and 4% recorded in 2008 and 2009. This is largely due to the economic downturn, resulting in key enduse industries, such as the construction and automotive sectors, suspending purchases of ferrous metals. Although the UK moved officially out of recession at the end of 2009, the economic recovery is expected to remain fragile for the foreseeable future, thus demand is projected to remain subdued during the current year. Market Forecast 2011-2015: The UK market for metal recycling is anticipated to increase year-on-year during the forecast period, with growth rates expected to fluctuate between a marginal level and 3% in real terms. In the short-term the market for recycled metal is anticipated to continue to be negatively affected by the uncertain economic conditions, with the recovery likely to remain fragile for the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, MBD expect the UK market for metal recycling to return to growth in 2011, albeit at a moderate 2%, reflecting signs of a recovery in a number of key enduse industries, most notably the automotive sector. However the outlook in other sectors, in particular construction, remains subdued. Overall, the UK market for metal recycling is forecast to increase by a cumulative 10% in real terms between 2010 and 2015.
