After researching the UK medical equipment market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

Market Review 2006-2010:

In 2010, the value of the UK medical equipment market is projected to decline by 9% to £3986.9 million in the year, consolidating a 3% decline recorded in the previous year. However, this follows year-on-year growth recorded between 2006 and 2008, with a particularly strong increase of 26% reported in the latter year. Overall, the market value is projected to increase by 21% between 2006 and 2010. The projected decline for the latter part of the review period, partly reflects NHS budgetary cuts and reduced expenditure on new hospital developments, negatively affecting spending on medical equipment.

Market Forecast 2011-2015:

The UK market for medical equipment is expected to decline by 1% in 2011. This is believed to be partially attributable to the 2010 budget announcement that the DoH had been asked to contribute £2.3 billion to the Treasury’s £5 billion of public spending cuts during the current financial year. UK sales of medical equipment are expected to increase between 2012 and 2015, although annual growth levels are not expected to exceed 3% in real terms. A stronger market development is anticipated to be hindered by future public spending cuts, which is likely to result in reduced government capital expenditure on new hospitals and on new equipment. Overall, the value of the medical equipment market is forecast to increase by 8% in real terms between the current year and 2015. A key driver for the long-term development of the market is the demographic trend towards an ageing population.
