Market Review 2004-2008:

In 2008 the value of the UK market for light metal packaging contracted by 2% to £1.349 billion. This partially offset 1% and 5% increases recorded in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Overall sales of light metal packaging increased by a cumulative 1% between 2004 and 2008. Opportunities for stronger growth within the market are believed to have been restricted as a result of substitution and rising costs within the sector. Furthermore, the increase in raw material prices has not assisted the competitive positioning of metal packaging in the market, particularly in volume terms. The recent increases in market value are believed to be a partial reflection of the efforts and success by light metal packaging companies to develop more innovative products.

Market Forecast 2009-2013:

In 2009 the value of the UK market for light packaging is anticipated to contract by 2% to £1.320 billion, reflecting the current economic downturn facilitating a reduction in business and consumer expenditure, the two sources of demand for the sector. Post downturn, between 2010 and 2013 growth rates in real terms of between 2% and 3% are expected with the value of the sector projected to reach £1.463 billion in 2013. This is equivalent to 8% increase compared with 2008 reflecting the trend prior to the downturn for growth in the sector and the return to previous levels of business and consumer expenditure once concerns about future levels of prosperity have subsided.
