Furthermore, glass has faced increased competition from other packaging materials, most notably plastic. Nonetheless, glass is expected to continue to remain the preferred packaging material in a number of sectors, as the material tends to be perceived as an environmentally friendly premium product.

Market Forecast 2009-2013:

In 2009 the UK market for glass packaging is anticipated to contract by 15% to £410.9 million, reflecting the current downturn and its impact on the sector. The severity of the downturn is anticipated to cause a further 2% reduction in its total value in 2010 as the slow and lengthy process of recovery begins. Post downturn the market is expected to exhibit moderate growth with levels between 1% and 3% anticipated. In 2013 the sector is anticipated to reach £428 million at 2008 prices, representing a cumulative 11% reduction compared with 2008. However any forecast made in the current set of conditions inevitably carries a greater level of uncertainty than would typically be the case.
