Released: October 2005 After researching the UK freight forwarding market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report: Market Review 2001-2005: MBD and trade opinion suggests that growth has been a feature of the UK freight forwarding market in recent years, buoyed by economic growth. In 2004, the UK market for freight forwarding increased by 5%, which is expected to be followed by a further 4% increase in 2005, taking the value of the market to £15.77 billion. The slight slowdown in growth in the latter year is a reflection of the current slowdown in economic growth. Indeed, in his latest pre-budget report the Chancellor had to halve his previous predictions for economic growth for 2005. Furthermore profitability in the freight forwarding sector remains under pressure from overcapacity and increasing transport, security and administrative costs. Market Forecast 2006-2010: The UK market for freight forwarding is anticipated to demonstrate real term growth throughout the five year forecast period up to 2010, although in the short-term growth is expected to be restricted by a slowdown in UK economic growth. Overall, the value of the freight forwarding market is forecast to increase by 12% between the current year and 2010. However, profitability is likely to remain low in the industry due to rising costs and intense competition, largely as a result of over-supply and diversification into forwarding areas by freighters and logistics companies.
