UK Food & Drink Packaging Market Development Report Press Release: UK Food & Drink Packaging Market Development Report

Released: July 2009

After researching the UK food & drink packaging market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

Market Review 2004-2008:

In 2008 the value of the UK market for food & drink contracted by 1% to an estimated £6.102 billion, reflecting the economic downturn and its impact on a number of sector which food and drink packaging rely on as sources of demand. Prior to the downturn demand increased in three of the other four years under review, with growth rates of between 1% and a review high of 6% in 2004 recorded. Overall demand is believed to have increased by a cumulative 1% between 2004 and 2008.

Market Forecast 2009-2013:

The current economic downturn is expected to facilitate a 1% reduction in the value of the UK market for food and drink packaging in 2009. Post downturn a slow recovery is anticipated reflected in a modest 1% growth in 2010 and negligible growth in 2011. In the last two years under review the sector is expected to contract by 2% in 2012 before more significant growth of 4% in 2013. Overall the value of the sector is anticipated to increase by 3% cumulatively between 2008 and 2013. A more positive market development is expected to be restricted partly due to grocery retailers and food and drinks manufacturers increasing efforts to reduce the amount of packaging used. At the same time, the dynamism of material substitution shows few signs of abating, and it is important to note that this is not a uniform trend towards any single packaging material, although the inertia of customers’ expectations of packaging remains a powerful force in the market. Nonetheless any growth is expected to be mainly attributable to new eating patterns such as “on the go” as well as the increased amount of people dining alone driven by the increase in one person households.
