RELEASED: OCTOBER 2008
After researching the UK electricity supply & distribution market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:
MARKET REVIEW 2002/03-2006/07:
Government data indicates total UK electricity usage increased during the first half of the review period, reaching a peak of 346 476 Gwh in 2005. However, total usage has been reduced by a modest 1% during both 2006 and 2007, to 341 945 Gwh in the latter year. Nonetheless, overall between 2003 and 2007 total UK electricity usage has been increased by a moderate 2%.
The domestic sector consistently accounted for the largest proportion of total electricity usage during the review period, representing 34% of the total in 2007, equivalent to 115 050 Gwh consumed in the year. The commercial sector formed the second largest share of UK electricity usage, equivalent to 22% (75 235 Gwh). In contrast, construction remained at the periphery of UK electricity usage, representing just a marginal share of the total, equivalent to 1 599 Gwh during the same year.
MBD believe capital expenditure by the distribution network operators (DNOs) in the UK increased in every year under review, reaching £1298.8 million (net of contributions) in 2006/07. Annual growth rates fluctuated between 3% and 9% throughout the period under review, culminating in an overall increase of 29%. The need to extend the existing network to meet increasing demand is driving investment upwards.
MARKET FORECAST 2007/08-2011/12:
Electricity distribution network operators capital expenditure is projected to increase throughout the forecast period, albeit at moderate annual levels. In 2011/12, expenditure is expected to increase by 2% in real terms to £1438.8 million (at 2006/07 prices), representing overall real term growth of 11% compared with the latter year of the review period. Anticipated growth is a reflection of increased demand along with the need to repair and replace the ageing infrastructure.
