UK Dentistry Market Development Report Press Release: UK Dentistry Market Development Report

Released: June 2010

After researching the UK dentistry market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:

Market Review 2005-2009:

In 2009, total UK expenditure on dental services increased by an estimated 4% in nominal terms, taking spending to £6965 million. This represents overall growth of 28% compared with 2005. This can be attributed to increased Government funding into NHS services and in particular, greater demand for private dentistry as a result of to restricted access to NHS dental care in recent years.

Market Forecast 2010-2014:

Total UK expenditure on GDS and private dental care is projected to increase by a cumulative 18% in real terms between 2009 and 2014, reaching £8240 million (at 2009 prices) in 2014. Annual growth levels are expected to fluctuate between 3% and 4%.

Between 2010 and 2014, the NHS dentistry market is forecast to increase, although level of growth is expected to remain moderate in real terms. Despite increased spending on the NHS, the rate of growth is anticipated to slow during the next few years, due to public spending cuts to reduce the UK’s budget deficit. Between 2009 and 2014, NHS dentistry expenditure is expected to increase by 12% to £3189 million (at 2009 prices) in 2014.

During the five year forecast period, growth within the private dentistry sector is projected to continue at a stronger rate than in the NHS dental sector. Indeed, the proportional importance of private dentistry to total dental care expenditure is anticipated to increase moderately from 60% in 2009 to 61% in 2014. In the latter year, expenditure on private dentistry is anticipated to reach £5051 million (at 2009 prices), representing notable growth of 21% in real terms compared with 2009. This partially reflects increasing cosmetic consciousness in the UK, along with the negative impacts of the 2006 dentistry reform, such as restricted access to NHS dentists.
