RELEASED: MAY 2008
After researching the UK cladding market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:
MARKET REVIEW 2002-2006:
The UK market for external wall cladding increased by 7% during 2007 to 36.96 million m2. This follows year-on-year growth recorded in the previous four years, with relatively consistent annual growth levels of between 5% and 6% recorded. Overall, since 2003, volume sales of external wall cladding have increased by an estimated 26%. The UK cladding market is believed to have followed a similar trend to construction output, which has generally been buoyant during recent years.
MARKET FORECAST 2008-2012:
In volume terms, UK demand for external wall cladding is projected to increase by between 2% and 4% in the five year forecast period to 2012 reaching 44.1 million m2 in the latter year. Demand for external wall cladding is largely driven by levels of construction output, which is expected to continue to increase in a number of sectors over the next five years albeit at a slower rate than that evident during the review period. For example, construction of residential buildings, which account for an estimated 24% of the total volume of the external wall cladding market, is anticipated to decline in 2008 reflecting the tightening of the money supply which is affecting mortgage approvals. However, in the longer term, the residential new build sector is likely to show one of the strongest growth potential, partly reflecting the continued housing shortage and government plans to build new homes.
