After researching the UK ceramic tiles market development and taking into account various other factors the following conclusions can be drawn from MBD's report:
MARKET REVIEW 2004-2008:
In 2008, the UK market for ceramic tiles is believed to have declined by a significant 22% in volume terms, to 72.1 million m². This consolidated the 1% decline recorded in 2007 and further reversed the trend for growth demonstrated between 2004 and 2006. The strongest increase was reported in 2006, when growth of 18% took volume sales to a peak of 93.1 million m². Demand for ceramic tiles has mainly been driven by a buoyant construction market, in particular in the private and public residential sectors. However, as new housing construction declined during 2008 due to the deteriorating economic conditions and the downturn in the housing market, this resulted in reduced demand for ceramic tiles.
MARKET FORECAST 2009-2012:
The UK market for ceramic tiles is expected to decline by a significant 25% in 2009 and by a more moderate 8% in 2010. This downward trend is a reflection of reduced housebuilding activity and the economic downturn, which is expected to continue to exert a downward pressure on expenditure on home improvement projects. Demand for ceramic tiles is forecast to return to growth by 2011, with volume sales anticipated to increase by a cumulative 18% between 2010 and 2013. However as a positive market development is strongly dependent on an economic recovery and increased construction activity, there is a degree of uncertainty concerning the timing and level of future growth.
