Market Review 2004-2008:

The UK market for catering equipment increased during three of the four years between 2004 and 2007, culminating in growth of 8% to £851.2 million in the latter year. However, this growth trend is anticipated to be reversed by a marginal decline to £850.5 million in 2008. This moderate reduction in sales partly reflects the deteriorating economic conditions in the UK. Consumer spending is relatively low and therefore has a negative effect on business expenditure. Catering companies may delay purchases of catering equipment until they are more confident with their economic position. Another influencing factor is the increasing trend for consolidation of catering companies, resulting in larger customer groups with more significant bargaining power, in turn driving down prices.

Market Forecast 2009-2013:

The UK market for catering equipment is anticipated to increase during each year of the forecast period, with the exception of a moderate 1% decline in 2009. In 2013, the value of the market is expected to reach £879.2 million, representing overall growth of 3% compared with the latest year of the review period. Modest annual real term growth reflects the projected slowdown in the catering market and also the accelerating closure rate in the public houses sector. However following the smoking ban, more public houses are beginning to offer catering services, which is likely to increase long term demand in the market
